About Oliver

Oliver is a sweet Maltese mix with the softest heart and the biggest desire to be loved. He came to us after being turned in as a stray, and although his start was rough, this little guy has never stopped trying.

When we first picked him up from the shelter, he had a seizure. We were given the option to leave him behind and choose a different dog, but medical dogs are so often overlooked despite having the capacity to live long and happy lives. We wanted to give this underdog a chance to find a happy home, and we are so grateful we did. With daily medication (about $20/month), his seizures are now fully controlled, and he is happy, healthy and thriving.

Another surprise to us upon rescuing Oliver was that Oliver also has microphthalmia, meaning his left eye is underdeveloped. It doesn’t appear that he has vision in that eye, which may be one of the reasons he is shy and cautious at first. Sadly, this small physical difference caused many people at the shelter to pass him by because he wasn’t “perfect.” But we believe it only makes him more special. His resilience, sweetness, and gentle spirit shine far brighter than any imperfection ever could.

Oliver is neutered, up to date on shots, and ready to join a family who will finally give him the security he’s waited so long for. He’s an easygoing little companion who could fit into many types of homes, but we think he would truly thrive in a slower-paced environment. He would do well in an apartment or a home, or with someone who travels most of the time as he is very adaptable. He absolutely adores affection and would happily spend his days curled up on the couch or relaxing beside someone who enjoys a calm, cozy lifestyle.

Shy at first, Oliver is still learning how to build confidence, but he warms up beautifully with patience and gentle encouragement. Every day, we see more of his personality peek through. He has started initiating the most endearing (if slightly awkward) attempts to play with the other dogs in his foster home. Watching him learn how to be a dog again has been fun as his quirky personality is starting to shine.

Oliver loves exploring the yard, meeting new dog friends, and checking out new places. He rides well in the car, is lightweight, and has a calm temperament. He gets along with dogs of all sizes, kids, and all people. While he may be timid at first, once he establishes trust, he can’t wait to spend his day with you and give you love.

He is also wonderfully low maintenance. Oliver is a total couch potato with low exercise needs and is both crate trained and dog-door trained. He’s potty trained too, and although he is still working on reducing marking inside the house, he has made steady improvements. With continued routine and consistency, we expect he will keep progressing. Leash walking is another skill he’s still building, and with continued practice and growing confidence, we expect him to keep improving.

Ultimately, what Oliver wants most is simple: someone to love. Once discarded and abandoned, he has slowly learned that there are people in the world that are kind and trustworthy, and we are finally seeing his spirit come alive again. Now feels like his moment, his turning point, to find the person or family who will cherish him. Oliver’s heart is open, his spirit is gentle, and he is ready to give all the love he has. If you’re looking for a loyal, tender little companion who will adore you forever, Oliver is waiting.
